Schreiber Farm & Ranch LLC
Farm Ranch
Schreiber Farm & Ranch is a third generation operation comprising 6,000 acres of dryland cropland and native grass. Management in recent years has focused on soil health principles. While cropping has been no-till for almost 10 years, we strive to achieve an organic no-till system independent of USDA support and commodity pressures. The most fundamental change has been the implementation of an intensified, diversified, and flexible crop rotation built around rangeland drought contingency concepts. This has evolved from a rigid wheat-corn-fallow rotation to an adaptive planting schedule with over 10 grass and broadleaf crops (so far), and greatly reduced fallow. All acres are 4-5 stars under CDA's STAR program.
Products & Services
While we do spray for weed control, we also recognize that there is no such thing as a weed problem. Indeed, weeds are a solution to some underlying ecological problem to be considered and directly addressed if possible. Other big changes occurring include:
  • Tighter row cropping and higher plant populations with a new drill capable of both 10" and 20" spacing
  • Perennial and/or polyculture crops. Triticale/pea mix planted spring '25; Kernza/sanfoin mix planned for fall '25
  • Composting using on-farm resources - scrap hay and cattle manure, wood chips from chicken windbreak renovations, greens from weed mowing collection
  • Compost extractor for nutrient management, and application on untreated seed, planned for 2026
  • Seed cleaner purchased for separating polyculture harvests and developing landrace seed sources
  • New field borders being added every year for noxious weed prevention and habitat value

In many ways, we see soil health as our product, while the crops, cattle, and chickens are the tools and "by-products" of these efforts. We also don't believe American consumers should pay both high prices at the grocery store AND pay into a heavily subsidized, extractive food system. We've worked with permaculture and strive to apply those principles at our 6,000 acre scale.

We're open to growing anything that both produces a profit and meets ecological goals, so let us know if you'd like to discuss something in particular, or just have questions in general.

Of the grains listed below, we have Danko rye available right now and anticipate having KWS Serafino rye and Kernza August 2026.
